It partially confirms what I've been hearing from members of my Astronomy club and my own attempt to image the comet from light polluted suburban skies on the 18th using a 127mm f/12 Maksutov and a Starlight Xpress MX916 camera stacking 10 40 second images. I didn't record the tail, which by all accounts so far is visible only with large aperture instruments, or the equivalent using CCD equipment. Hi David, I caught the tail a few nights ago with a 4" refractor, although it did take a fair bit of processing to pull it out. It also took me by surprise as there appears to be much a lot of structure, not just the usual thin line that I've come to expect... http://www.digitalsky.org.uk/comets/machholz.html -- Pete http://www.digitalsky.org.uk Home of the Lunar Parallax Demonstration Project |
