mail. 99% of what I receive in the mail is junk mail and bills. The
junk mail goes straight into the trash. I don't think most people would
miss junk mail if it simply stopped arriving.

Bills are starting to go electronic. I get my Sprint bill through email
and their website and I pay through their website too. No more checks
"in the mail" or simply lost in the mail is a good thing. It's a real
p.i.t.a. to find out that bill you thought you paid isn't because the
check never arrived (it's happened to me a few times over the years).

As far as packages go, like I said previously, the USPS has got
competition for that. How long will it be before we wake up and realize
that it's stupid for the government to continue to compete with private
industry in this marketplace?

Yes and no. If you can deliver things more efficiently, the money made from
junk-mail can more effectively cover the costs.

You mean like the 1970s when the USPS stopped being a truly government
agency. ;-)

When UPS and Fedex can guarantee 1st class delivery anywhere, then we can
talk.

That said, the USPS is finding ways to compete. In fact it's not uncommon
these days for UPS or Fedex to ship stuff to my house via USPS.

They pick it up at the manufacturer, ship it across country and deliver it
to the local post-office who then delivers it. This strikes me as a
reasonable compromise. They get the value and efficiencies of their
cross-country delivery system without having to worry about the last mile.
