Ancient astronomers

In a forum like s.a.a. where most readers can't get past the idea that
there was an astronomical history before the Greek civilization,and
that civilization does have a magnificent heritage in attempting to
put observations in context,the really,really old astronomies have
something to them which borders on the romantic.What observer here
doesn't know the thrill of constellation spotting and in the clear

It is no wonder that the some of the oldest texts of Judaeo-
Christianity may have originated in older times as they remark on the
constellations and particularly the Book Of Job where men sometimes
are fated to experience the wider view of life that exists in
encountering fundamental human traits which is what makes these texts
so thrilling for the traveler through that country open to all people
of courage -

The author recognizes something people here can't for clearly his
reference is not to the circumpolar stars but to a star such as
Sirius which disappears for 70 days due to the orbital motion of the
Earth,a more balanced view of the constellations setting the
background for the planetary wanderers and their motion.This is the
romance of astronomy,the sheer antiquity of its observations that are
now lost to a blizzard of words to suit concepts that exist only in
the imagination.
