Is it possible for this group to be moderated to eliminate the posts from
the trolls and loons? Is it asking too much to keep this group on the topic of amateur astronomy? I am tired to thousands of posts from trolls and even more inexcusable are the rants and foul language from participants that sometimes provide helpful on-topic information. A recent example is the thread regarding the Boy Scouts of America. I, like everyone else have an opinion regarding this organization, but this opinion whether positive or negative, should not be expressed in this newsgroup!!! If the topic is not related to astronomy, equipment, observing, imaging, etc, it does not belong here. It is that simple. What is so difficult about that concept? |

Some folks have trouble with that. related to astronomy, equipment, observing, imaging, etc, it does not belong here. It is that simple. What is so difficult about that concept? If you followed the Boy Scout thread, you probably noticed that it started off on-topic and only disintegrated later. Oh, well. Thread-morphing, too, is the nature of Usenet. Mij
In short No it isnt possible to moderate a newsgroup. Its basically up to the reader of the group if they want to participate in a discussion or even read the post. Sometimes a thread on astronomy will digress to some other topic totally unrelated to astronomy but that's the way it goes. If it gets boring to you stop reading that thread. Very simple. As far as BSA many people like and approve of the organization, myself included. Others do not. The merit badge can be enough to place the seed of astronomy with some of these youngsters and promote the hobby or even a life long career. IMNSHO there are moderated groups on groups.yahoo.com that are administered by "loons", and any deviation from their brand of fanaticism will get you booted out! Is it possible for this group to be moderated to eliminate the posts from
the trolls and loons? I consider this newsgroup to be moderated. I moderate it for myself. Takes a bit of restraint (which I don't always have) but it does not take too much skill to recognize one of Min's posts, a thread that has lost its way or a troll at work. Just avoid em. The upsside of this newsgroup is that it has posters who really know what the hell they are talking about, something lacking in other moderated forums. Yeah sometimes things get a bit rough here, but S.A.A. is playing with the big boys and and thats just they way things go sometimes... jon |

This idea comes up at lest once a year and the answer is no. You would have to
form a new newsgroup and someone would have to be the one who gets and ok's all the posting. There are such newsgroups, but they have far less postings and far less users. -- "In this universe the night was falling, the shadows were lengthening towards an east that would not know another dawn. But elsewhere the stars were still young and the light of morning lingered: and along the path he once had followed, man would one day go again." Arthur C. Go to Astromart.com...Their forums are quickly becoming what SAA used
to be. Herb has said on a few occasion that he will not let his forums become what SAA is now. Joe |
