Default Revelation Binoculars 15x70, 20x80 & 20x100

Hi group,

I've lurked around here for a few years now and at long last I'm about to
buy some bino's (not enough room to store a scope). I've seen and read
reviews on different binoculars avialable for the night sky, but I've only
just come across the Revelation products.

I just tried to pick up a review from S&T but to no avail, so I just
wondered if there are any opinions/experience from this group on these
products?

Regards,

Andy

You will need to get a tripod for a pair this big. Although you can
probably hold them for a short time, after a short time they'll
become a pain to use.
Plus the higher magnification will accentuate any wobble from them
being hand-held (which will also be increased by their weight).
Oh yes, any old tripod will not do. You'll need one that is rated
for the weight of the binoculars. Plus, you'll be looking up, rather
than horizontally. This means you'll either need a big tripod that
can extend (when carrying the weight) to above your head height, or
you'll need something to sit on, too.
With a little ingenuity, you can use your seat as storage for the
tripod and binoculars, but it'll need a bit of shopping around or
handiwork.
Final thought, are you sure you'll have enough space for this stuff?

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the info. I'm aware I need a tripod and would purchase at the
same time. I also feel storage would be easier just because of the physical
size compared to a scope.

I'm really hoping for some opinions of the binoculars themselves i.e. are
they worth buying compared to say Strathspeys? I'm aware those have been
recomended on this group before.

I've noticed the Revelations are sold by establishments such as Telescope
House, but as the prices are that much lower compared to Strathspeys and
others, I'm just a little cautious as to whether these are real VFM or just
relatively cheap rubbish . I do tend to lean towards "You get what you pay
for" but wanted to check with the group first for any experience of this
particular make.

Regards,

Andy

Hi Andy,

I've always found that you get great advice on all things astro here;

Just register and ask away, oh and don't forget to say hi in the welcome

knowledgeable folks, give it a go, I'm sure you'll see what I mean.

Cheers,

Ian

I have a pair of 15x70s and while I'm no expert I'm very happy with the
optics, build quality etc on mine.

I tried using a pair of 20x80 this spring. I found them too heavy for
comfort although resting them on a fence post helped.

That said some wonderful views and some useful science can be done
with this type of kit.

I was given a pair of large OG binoculars as a present. They never
really got used since I could not find a tripod to take the none
standard fitting. Still in the bedroom somewhere.
