@bignews6.bellsouth.net: SO 0253-1652 According to this: http://www.nbso.org/NBSO_100_Closest_Stars.htm 12.53 ly They don't cite the source of the measurement but I would guess the ESA Hipparcos astrometry mission. Klazmon |

Hipparcos flew in the early 1990s; this star (apparently known to some as "Teegarden's") was only reported in 2003, from data obtained by NEAT, and the current distance estimate dates from 2006. See http://www.solstation.com/stars/so025300.htm, which credits relevant observations to RECONS, Allegheny Observatory, and the USNO. -- Odysseus |

Thanks. I guess it is about time for Hipparcos V2. NASA's FAME mission was cancelled. I gather that the planned SIM mission has the capability but isn't intended as a general cataloguing project but aimed at planet finding, microlensing and studying a limited number of specific targets. Is there anything else planned? The Europeans are due to launch GAIA in about the 2011 to 2013 timescale. I personally wouldn't count on SIM flying. |
