But if the plastic lens is also divided into two lenses, there are
enough degrees of freedom that it seems to me something might be
possible.


Have you considered the issues with the mechanical properties of the plastic,
stiffness for example and the ability for it to be polished to the necessary
fineness as well as its homegenitity??
