"Here, both the chemistry, mineralogy, and the morphology just scream
water," Squyres said. "This is more solid than anything else that
we've seen in the whole mission."

The gypsum vein is also intriguing for scientists interested in
whether or not Mars was ever capable of supporting life. Some of the
ancient wet environments Spirit and Opportunity have found were likely
very acidic. But gypsum formation is consistent with (though not
dependent on) a more neutral and therefore benign pH, researchers said.

NASA Science News for Dec. 8, 2011

As NASA's newest Mars rover Curiosity heads for the Red Planet, veteran
rover Opportunity continues to make discoveries. Opportunity's latest
find, an apparent vein of the mineral gypsum, is a "slam dunk" sign of
past water on Mars, say researchers.

I think the message is out - you can stop any time now.
Maybe drop by your Marshaltown KFC and take a break?
Have some mineral water -

By now, the evidence for liquid water on Mars' surface in its past

is so extensive that we can probably treat it as a fact. But, so far at
least, we haven't found a way to determine whether that water ever
supported living creatures. Still, the Homestake find is another
indication that Mars' waters were present in a variety of environments,
both on the surface and percolating beneath it.
