Default Coronado PST

Man, I have got the fever and I have never even looked through it. I didn't
realize it had an H-alpha filter in the package (it does, right?) I just
made
my Dob purchase, but in the future, would it be a waste to buy the PST
when you can buy a regular refractor and just add the filters? One, I have
heard that it can damage your optics, and two, those filters seem to cost
four figures. Am I missing something here, or is the PST the only
affordable
way to view the sun in all it's glory (most of it anyways)?
Thanks,
-Tom

Here, too. I fear the advent and proliferation of the PST may bring on
an ice age :-)

Yup. If you decide to order one, be prepared for a looooooong wait - they
are backordered pretty much everywhere.

I have one mounted on Orion EQ1 mount - views are FANTASTIC !!!

While observing the Sun, there is no need for multicoatings etc, so cheap
EPs and cheap Barlows work just great - in fact,
much better than expensive multicoated ones.

I got lucky: Ordered mine on a Sunday and had it the following Wed. But
then I did work at finding out who had recently ordered one and what the
stock was like (Yahoo PST Group, where many of those in saa with PSTs
also hang out, was very helpful for that).

....Ummm, B & H seems to have tapped a steady supply of PSTs, and currently
show them as "In Stock" (though they run through them quickly):

or (if that URL gets truncated):

And yes... they ARE awesome instruments, especially at this price-point!

Hi Paul,

Well...here's hoping! Immediately upon seeing your post, I visited the B&H
site and, like you, saw they showed 'In Stock' on the PST's. I placed the
order. This morning, I checked their site and saw 'Out of Stock'. I'll let
you know what transpires. Of course, depending on your location, you may
just hear my screams of joy from NE Ohio if this arrives in 5 days!

Clear Skies,
Dave Jessie

Actually, I just got mine today from Orion; the wait was about a
month, with the day of arrival being a week ahead of schedule. Much
better than waiting for an AP scope, or even a Starmaster for that
matter.

Though I haven't gotten it out under the sun yet, I must say that it
is one finely crafted instrument. It certainly looks and feels like
its worth more than $500, and after reading all of these testimonies I
can't wait to look through it.

Definitely the most affordable now. I have one and it is great!

PST (with 12mm eyepiece) = $499
Add 18mm CEMAX eyepiece = $99

Total price = $598

Disadvantages:

1. Solar scope ONLY. Cannot be used for night time or terrestrial
observing.

2. Diameter of internal etalon filter is only 25mm.

For the same setup on a regular refractor:

Small Refractor = $500-2000
SM-40 HA filter = $995
Blocking filter = $455
Adapter plate = $175
12mm eyepiece = $125
18mm eyepiece = $125

Low end price = $2375
High end price = $3875

Advantages:

Can be used as night time or terrestrial scope.
