Default Orion telescopes 80mm ED Apo Refractor

I had a chance to use Orions recently released 80mm ED and was really quite
impressed.
Much better than I had expected, just like many of the reviews have
indicated.

I haven't had enough experience with the company, and was wondering if they
have an
established enough history to be able to make a reasonable guess as to
whether they
are likely to follow this model with a 100mm or maybe larger version?

I know it would cost more to produce but they already have the rest of the
hardware in
place with their 100 and 120 Skyview Pro's.

Anybody heard anything?

Thanks,
F Marion

Hi:

I wouldn't be surprised. That depends on if the people making this scope (the
80ED) for them, Synta of China, can produce a credible 102 ED scope
for..oh...what do you think guys? 800 bucks? I'd guess that they will be able
to. Orion has been around since the 1970s, and is known for their excellent
customer service.

Peace,

Celestron is now offering a spotting scope version of the
Synta made scope with a zoom eyepiece. Same objective
glass used. Interestingly, they also show a 100mm ED
version of the same spotter. Now whether this means that
a 100mm ED astro version is soon to follow (whether under
the Orion or Celestron labels) is anybody's guess. The
100mm ED spotter was listed for $629. Have no idea
where the astro version (if there is one) would come in.

The 100mm ED spotter is F5.4 so I think the color correction is not what one
would be hoping for in an Astroscope.

Jon,

I saw that too. It would make for a nice rich field scope, but it would
have
color, no question. Still, quite a bit better than an F/5.4 achromat.

I did here some rumors to the effect that an F/9 might happen. That would
be more in line with the color correction of the 80ED at F/7.5.

Thanks, Tom Davis

I guess during the day when the observers pupil is restricted to 2mm the false
color might be minimized.

I think that if one keeps the same color correction as the ED80, the focal
ratio should end up about F9.4 making for focal length of about 37 inches. I
think an F9.4 scope is significantly less attractive than an F7.5 scope because
of the widefield advantages of the fast scope.
