Default Santa bring in the Orion 80mm ED

Ho ho ho

Santa just delivered the Orion 80mm ED to me. I'm so happy !

Everything looks good, But of course it is cold and cloudy right here in
Kentucky. Initial check out of the backyard deck looking at Fastfood
sign,Interstate traffic and TV tower looks good.
Tomorrow i'll do a daylight optic test to see how is the color correction
standup.
and test the Orion 80mm ED against UO80mmf6.25 and Celestron 4inch HD
When it clear up and some extensive test, i'll have to decide if Celestron
4inch or UO 80mm f6.25 need to go.

I'll be very interested in your comparison as the UO 80 was high on my list
at one time, based on a bunch of great reviews, and this Orion looks like it
has similarly good performance.

Will do that After this week. School Final and senior project prevent any real
star test other than quick peek.
But based on quick peek
Orion 80mm ED win hands down in Chromatic aberation field.
UO 80mm is a bit more compact and not as fat.
UO 80mm uses all brush aluminium, Looks very industrial. If anodized to another
color, my wife will probably let me keep it in living room for a quick grab and
go scope.
Orion Uses some roled metal and plastic. So I don't expect the same durability
as UO in Exterior finish.
Finger print shows up on Orion ED like mayfly in may. ARRRGGGHHH.
Orion crayford focuser is nicer but no focus lock. (Definite minus here ).
UO 2inch and 11/4 inch eyepiece adapter is not convinient at all.
Orion ED 2inch to 11/4 inch adapter feature Tring thread so for primefocus
photography you just need a T adapter for your camera.

So far the view in daytime are about even but I give Orion 80mm ED a slight
edge vs UO 80mm.

For the price i cannot complain
I pay $ 329 if i'm not mistaken for UO80mm f6.25 Kit form University Optic. in
1993 or 1994 Orion at one time sell the same refractor but in built form called
80mm Ultrascan (finish in black as opposed to brush aluminum ) for 400 or so
buck.
Now in 2003 I pay 429 for Orion 80mm ED. I say this is a fair price.
With my past experience with UO 80mm f6.25
Hopefully this is also a beginning to a long friendship

p.s
Just to emphasized abit more.
I also has a 8inch f8 and 12inch f5.2 all with mirror from Mark D Harry and a
Celestron 4 inch.
The UO 80mm is my most used scope with 8inch MarK D Harry coming in second.
I most likely going to sell the Celestron 4 inch Just because of the bulk. and
slight improvement it offered vs either UO80mm or Orion 80mm.
