Viewed from a backyard 30 miles west of Rochester, NY. at around 3 AM.
I had kind of a long and difficult time finding it. It seemed fainter than the predicted mag . I finally found it with the Skymap printout, in Aquila, near the point of the Summer Triangle. It was just a small soft elongated glow with a stellar like coma ,in my Canon 15x45 IS binoculars. Pushing the IS button on the Canons off and on, helped me distinguish the comet from the surounding starfield. The view was less impressive at 25X in the Televue Ranger. I was thinking more like mag 8 - 8.5, but this might have been deceiving because of it's relatively small size. Still, I was very pleased to get a look, that got a bit better after my eyes were completely dark adapted. Get to the darkest skies possible to see this comet, as a metro urban attempt will probably not be possible . Bill Ruscher Jr. |
