Mark "Solar Eclipse, STEREO Style - On Feb. 25, 2007 there was a transit of the Moon across the face of the Sun - but it could not be seen from Earth. " A planet on a faster inner orbital circuit overtakes the slower moving Earth with the central Star as a backdrop - http://www.vt-2004.org/mt-2003/mt-20...999-normal.jpg That picture of Mercury about align with the Earth and the central Sun clearly shows how orbital paths does not follow a line perpendicular to the maximum solar diameter. Being a celestial sphere astrophotographer means that transits are nothing other than objects passing before the Sun and the Earth or imaging sats, the information contained in the heliocentric perspective is lost and diluted to the point of triviality.Even when images ,such as the one above of Mercury ,should provide an exciting way to develop new ways to approach the motions of the Earth and consequences of these motions, this era is firmly rooted in retaining the diluted version of 'transits'. Astronomy is in tatters with no real disciplined authority to pull it out of the celestial sphere scaffolding which was introduced in the 17th century and is useless for explaining contemporary images. Do you all wish a fool's pardon or are you all astrophotographers ?. |
