The big surprize waiting astronauts on Moon was the fact that the moon
surface was covered by small spherules. 382 kg of Moon rocks was brought back to earth. The spherules were found to be glass. Both volcanic eruptions (also on Hawaian islands) and especially meteoritic crater forming impacts throw huge amounts of molten and gasfied crust material up into ballistic flight. As surface tension is the main influencing factor forming the drops before they cool and solidify rapidly, they become round glass balls. Mars is more like Moon than Earth in size and gravity. Extremly thin Mars atmosphere helps to brake down the falling speed so that a little bigger spheres survive there than on the Moon. Why do we again wonder similar glass spheres on another small planet like body Antti Jarvi |
