Between some poor weather and high mountains to my west i have not yet
been able to spot comet McNaught from my home. However today, Saturday, from my south-facing driveway at about 9:30am i found McNaught in daylight! Using the trunk of a palm tree to block the sun i slowly scanned a few degrees left of the sun with my Leica 10x32 binoculars. At first nothing at all, just bright sky. I was about to give up then suddenly, BANG, there it was! A bright white head with just a hint of tail showing. Was smaller overall than i was expecting. Tried to spot with my naked eyes but was unsuccessful. Might try again in a few hours when the comet is higher in the sky. After finding with the binoculars i brought out my Tele Vue 76 and showed the comet to my family. Very neat! If you have clear skies today give it a shot. But do be careful to make sure there is no chance you'll accidentally hit the sun!! ..Florian Palm Springs, Calif. |
