Heliostat

A Heliostat is a device that tracks the movement of the sun. It is
typically used to orient a mirror, throughout the day, to reflect
sunlight in a consistent direction. When coupled together in sufficient
quantities, the reflected sunlight from the heliostats can generate an
enormous amount of heat if all are oriented towards the same target. It
was originally developed as an instrument for use in surveying,

Perhaps it was due to some atmospheric condition like that which that causes

The best known example would be the three suns appearing before the battle
of Mortimer's Cross.

It has also been suggested as an explanation for some of Ezekiel's vision.

Obviously if the sun really stood still it would be because the Earth had
stopped rotating! ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????

That's the only way the sun could really stand still as seen from Earth. It
is the Earth's rotation that makes the sun appear to move through the sky.
The sun wouldn't really be standing still anyway, it is racing around in the
galaxy at a fast rate of knots, carrying its planets with it.

Archimedes is said to have burned an enemy fleet with mirrors. A heliostat
Death Ray!

I don't know how true the story of the destruction is, but the principle is
feasible, if the mirrors are large enough and curved.

Mythbusters had two goes at this. Big mirrors, lots of small mirrors etc
etc. And they replicated the boats that were supposed to have been burnt
(triemes?). They couldn't do it, and that was against a stationary target.

Triremes?
You need something that would concentrate the sun's rays into one spot. A
magnifying glass will do it. Perhaps if a big one was combined with a mirror
it would work. But did the Greeks have the technology to make glass like
that?
What were the mirrors they used, polished metal?

Lasers bounced off mirrors into one spot should do the job today.

The myth was busted really. Forget about many small mirrors (polished
shields held by hoplites perhaps) because it became very clear they are
impossible to aim collectively. The individuals have no idea where they are
pointing because the other countless mirrors create too much 'noise' around
the target. Many small mirrors held in a mechanical array that aimed them
was tried and that failed too. With bigger mirrors the focal length has to
be perfect and it is hard to imagine the enemy sitting quitely at the
correct spot long enough to be torched.
