I don't understand why are these pictures in black and white?
Why? Don't they have a technology to send color pictures?
Could someone explain?

Patience, patience. You ain't seen nothin' yet. It'll be
coming in glorious high-resolution color 3D once everything
is tested and set up. This was just an initial scan and download
via the orbiting Mars Oddyssey spacecraft--the first interplanetary
network system.

A lot of the future images should look like they'd been taken with
a top-of-the-line Nikon camera. In stereo. You'll need the 3D glasses
with red and green lens.

These initial pictues are taken by a navigational camera, not the main one,
which is not unstowed yet.

I found red/cyan worked best. Try this place for 3d glasses:

Color pics will come in today (Jan 4). The initial data dump
is designed to provide the most information possible in the
shortest amount of time - in case the thing stops working and
also to allow the rover folks to start route planning.

That is the really cool part of this mission. Instead of
repeated views of the same scene, we will soon be watching
the rover head toward one of those horizons.

Color pictures will follow. The B&W's come not from the main photo
camera, but from the "where the heck am I, what's in my way?" camera
that the rover will use to stay out of trouble. No reason it should
be in color.

btw - even if you have only B&W cameras, you can get color pictures by
shooting through a series of colored lenses, then combining the
images.

Color! The MER rovers have color imaging abilities
like you won't believe! But, since black and white
takes much less time to image and much less bandwidth
to send back, the first images sent back are black
and white. Because they want to get back any and
all imagery as soon as possible, if not sooner,
especially as to the state of the rover (the
overhead image) and the surroundings, so they can
plan the next moves (even more so if they see
something wrong). The first images from Pathfinder
were also black and white, FYI.

I simply can't wait for it. What is your time estimation for receiving
these high resolution 3d images?
