Bush speech on Moon cancelled/postponed...

As I understand it, Bush's speech on a return to the Moon was
cancelled due to it being really, really, the wrong time to announce a
huge new spending program with unclear goals. Anyone have more
details than I do?

Maybe they knew Saddam was close to capture so the administration put
the golden bullet back away, since it wasn't needed just now.

Yeah, there's nothing to do on the moon

My guess is the Adminstration is still waiting for confirmation that the
Chinese are doing a manned landing. With a double deficit problem and a
falling dollar, it makes no sense to go on borrowing even more to finance an
obscure space adventure.

Occam's Razor would indicate that there never was a Moon speech
planned in the first place.

Yes, it's kind of dumb (not that that would be anything new for Mr.
Ordover) to talk about cancelling something that was never scheduled
to start with.

Wow, Rand, you manage to get even more ignorant as time goes by...

The administration has been floating trial ballons about this topic
for a few months (check out cnn, fox, etc.) to see what the reaction
would be before they committed to the speech. Since the reaction was
universally negative, they pulled the idea at the last minute - just
as Bush took off before the attemped redo of the Wright Brother's
flight once it became clear it would fail.

If you cancel other programs, like the shuttle and OSP, it need not be all
that expensive. Bush may be having trouble making up his mind about which
program to cancel.
