The problems on Challenger and Columbia were well known before they
were sent up on their ill-fated missions. But NASA (and some have suggested the government knew as well) that those problems existed but still allowed the flights to go on. As a result, 7 astronauts were sacrificed to the Gods. NASA engineers never would have let those birds fly, given their problems. Whenever there is a car with apparent safety issues, those in charge of NASCAR will not allow that car to participate. NASA would do well to take the same tack when it comes to Space Shuttle launchings! itellitlikeitis (to many, many people's dismay) |

Yeah, but also if NASCAR was in charge of the shuttle, it would only be allowed to turn left and the engines would have restrictor plates... |

Then, if their vehicles get a little banged up, they cut off anything loose, duct tape the rest and send it back out.
