Default von Braun photo and rocket models

In this famous photo of WvB,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:W..._von_Braun.jpg

On the left are an Atlas and a Saturn I. On the right is a Saturn V.
Is the one in the middle a Saturn 1B and the fourth one a Saturn II?
It looks like a Saturn I first stage with an SIV-B second stage,
perhaps shortened.

They are, left to right:

- Atlas-Centaur (I think)
- Saturn 1 (configuration during first few flights)
- Saturn 1 (configuration during later flights)
- Saturn 1B
- Saturn 5

The two versions shown are the Saturn I (or C-1) Block I with
dummy S-IV second stage and Saturn I Block II with live S-IV
second stage. There were plans for "Apollo A" flights using
Saturn I Block II launchers. These missions would have used
the "SA/AS-1XX" identifiers. The Saturn IB missions ended
up using the "SA/AS-2XX" identifiers.

Thanks Ed -- that was the "A" reference ("Apollo A" flights using Saturn I
Block II launchers. These missions would have used the "SA/AS-1XX"
identifier) -- that I was remembering.

Good morning. I agree . . . it does look like an Atlas-Centaur.

As an aside, several photos taken of von Braun in his (this) office
reveal that the scale of the Sat V models was so large a large square
hole was cut in the ceiling( running the length of the model display)
to accomodate it.........Doc
