Meade Instruments Granted Patents on Reflection, Refraction

Costa Mesa, California

Meade Instruments, the world's largest manufacturer and importer of
optical equipment for amateur astronomers, has been awarded patents on
the image-forming technologies used in its telescopes and eyepieces.
According to Meade spokesman Bob Scott, "Meade has developed the
physical processes of reflection and refraction to such a unique degree
that our telescopes offer an unprecedented ability to form pictures
made from light itself. Our competitors have also begun to make use of
these properties of transparent solids and metallic films. Meade
intends to protect its valuable intellectual property, and now we have
the legal means to do so."

Meade plans to levy a royalty of $100 on every competitive use of these
optical phenomena. Affected products include telescopes, cameras,
binoculars, microscopes, household mirrors, flashlights, jewelry, and
flatware.

Mr. Scott concluded the press conference by demanding a payment of $100
from every person present who was making use of eyeglasses, contact
lenses, or functioning human eyeballs.
