Manned mission to Jupiter?

I seem to remember reading something about the inner 3 main moons
through millions of orbits have swept the radiation zone free of
charged particles, or something like that.

Are you sure you are not confusing this with the deleted scene at the end
of the novel, where the Bowman star-child detonates all the orbital nuclear
weapons platforms when the governments of Earth attempted to target on him,
because he "preferred a cleaner sky" ???

I think most of the charged particles currently in the zone come from
Io. And they are relatively plentiful though maybe not concentrated
like the Van Allen belts of Earth.
