Default Stellarium software

Hi all, someone has kindly just sent me this link for some software I
haven't seen or heard of befo

http://stellarium.sourceforge.net/index.html

It's too big a download for me, and I doubt my ageing computer would run
it anyway, but would be interested to know if others have tried it and
what they think of it. Any thoughts anyone?

Well actually i've installed this on a friend pIII with 128mb of ram it ran
very badly, but once i put a 64mb AGP video card in it ran like a dream.

Cracking peice of software and you can make your own landscapes too.

Mine is about the same, AMD350Mhz processor, 128mb ram, 16mb graphics
card, 1998 vintage!

Not really worth upgrading this one at this stage. It's becoming
increasingly difficult to find Win98 drivers for some recent equipment
too, and lots of things these days need XP. When it finally gives up
I'll buy a new one, until then it does most of what I want. Might also
give Linux another go, I'll see.

Thanks again for all the comments.

Check it with a virus scan, it's common to see this extension on virii.

Holly,

Oui, c'est tres bein. I particularly like the fact that this software is
open source and you can change all the deep sky objects to your own images.
The sunrise/set effect is very good too. You can click and drag smoothly
around the sky. A fantastic tool for education. But anyone who does not have
a recent PC is in trouble as the program is hungry for resources. The is
also an active comminity around this program with lots support. Plus Linux
and MacOS versions too. Worth buying a new computer for.

Stellarium gives you a nice real look of the sky
including simulated daylight(you can switch that off)
and I mainly use that to check out where to find
a planet,star etc.,before running outside.

Thank you for posting this link, so that I become aware of this very
nice program.

I can't tell for sure, but I expect, that if the graphics card in your
aging computer supports OpenGL it will be worth for you to wait even
hours for the download to be finished.

For an astronomy newbie like me it was a great experience to see all
what Stellarium can show.
It was installed quickly without any problems on my Windows XP, Pentium
4 3.0 GHz, Radeon 9250 machine and impressed me by smooth and fast
animation of the sky and the possibility to set the viewpoint to any
point on Earth.
It shows the stars, Moon phases and the positions of the planets, the
day/night cycle, the ecliptic and equatorial line and more - just a
planetarium for home use.
