Hello!

Can anyone direct me to a place I can find a shortish version of the
Greek mythology behind the constellations? I doubt this has much
resonance for you science-heads but all help is appreciated!

Cheers
Olv.

First of 312,000, that is :-) If you leave out 'stars' you "only" get
144,000.If you want our opinion on whether they are reliable that's a
different question.

Greek mythology 'behind' the constellations goes back thousands of years earlier to what is now a region in Iraq.

Stone me, I've used the site since Pontius was a pilot and I've never
noticed that.

Thanks

Oh. I thought he was a Pilates instructor. Or maybe the inventor of
that pastime.

Seems I've been barking up the wrong jolly old tree. Thanks awfully.

The best "short version" is probably Ian Ridpath's _Star Tales_. More
details of this and other suggestions at:
http://www.astunit.com/books/mythology.htm and
http://www.astunit.com/books/uk-mythology.htm

Excellent general myth resource is:
http://home.comcast.net/~chris.s/myth.html

For myths behind the constellations (not limited to Greek), see Staal's
_The New Patterns in the Sky_. My inclination if I wanted Greek stuff
would be to read Staal, then flesh it out with Robert Graves's _Greek
Mythology_.

Best,
Stephen
