Default BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Distant world tops Pluto for size

"An icy, rocky world reported last year to be orbiting the Sun in the distant reaches
of the Solar System really is bigger than Pluto, scientists say.

New observations of the object, which goes by the designation 2003 UB313, show it to
have a diameter of some 3,000km - about 700km more than Pluto."

At least they've got the discovery details right in that article, in a
broadcast yesterday they were describing it as "discovered last year"!

??? This object was discovered in 2005, which is "last year" since this is
2006. Not sure what you are trying to imply. The new diameter
determination was announced this year, but there was an expectation that the
diameter would be large, right from the discovery.

Hi Mike,

I think What Charles was alluding to is that its "discovery" was announced
last year, but it was first discovered by the team in 2003, but they
required more observations to determine its orbit and rough size before the
formal announcement was made.

Very best wishes and clear, dark skies.

That is correct. They (and Mike Dworetsky) should have spotted and
understood the 2003 in its full designation, 2003UB313.

OK, yes, the object was nothing special until the orbit could be determined,
as announced in 2005. The original images were obtained in 2003.
