Dennis di Cicco's review in the Feb. S&T of a 12" RCX400 is pretty darn
good. Maybe a bit to gushing (he clearly LOVES the scope), but it covers
all of the bases and addresses a number of complaints and potential
problems. Good job.

let me guess, the review was extremely positive....

what a surprise. with the amount of advertising mease does in S&T and Astronomy, Meade
practically owns the mags.

Maybe, maybe not, but I had the opportunity to observe with a 12" RCX placed
not 8 feet from my 12" LX200GPS in the fall and was blown away by the views.
I would unhesitatingly recommend this scope. Whether you like Meade or not,
this scope is a winner. By the way, Meade most definitely does NOT own me.

Too cynical for me. I doubt they would bias the review of a major new
product, based on advertisers. It could just be he really does love the
scope .. and why not, at those prices?

But if you feel that way, no reason to subscribe or read S&T. Guess
there is no "Astronomy Consumer Reports" :-)

Perhaps not, but it seems you own a Meade. :-o

Possibly, one source of--well, not bias, exactly, but let's call it a
certain generosity--one source of that might be that Dennis and a lot of
the older reviewers recall a time (*cough*Halley*cough*) when there were
a lot of sucky telescopes out on the market, and now, just about every
telescope that comes down the pike so consistently outperforms those
1980s turkeys that they naturally receive them eagerly. Maybe what we
need to do is to get a lot more of the young, silver-spoon-in-the-mouth,
1/50-wave-RMS-and-smoother-than-Joe-Garagiola's-bald-head-mirror-having
whippersnappers to start writing reviews.

I have critcized past reviews because I thought they were poorly done, and
not because of the conclusions. I feel that this one is well done, again
regardless of its conclusions. Whether or not you like the scope/Meade, or
I like the scope/Meade, and anybody else likes the scope/Meade has nothing
to do with assessing the quality of the review. I think that S&T has been
guilty of publishing some crappy reviews, but I don't believe that S&T has
or would publish a faked review. If I did I would cancel my subscription.

Hi Brian,

Yes, I own a Meade, and a similar sized Celestron on a Losmandy GEM, and
another on an ALT/AZ fork, and an APO on a GEM, and... I really don't
believe I have any brand preference whatsoever. All I know is that 12" RCX
was really special!

Boy, Phil...you have no idea!
So many scopes. So little time.
And I'm a W A Y distant second (at best) to my buddy John, who I'm sure is
reading this and laughing.

in fact I do not read S&T, but I do read Astronomy ;-)
and I fact I own both an ETX105 and 10" LX200, and love them.
