Hello there,
Anyone know of a map showing the location of observatoies around the world? Even a list of lat/lon coordinates would be good. I found a few and plotted them in google earth but finding it a little unreliable. Tried a search for coordinate lists but it comes up a bit patchy. A map would speed things up a lot. my Helwan question about viewing sn1987, found out that the optical instruments were moved to the Kottamia site courtesy of steve. Plotted the location on google earth and in stellarium which unfortunately does not have an altitude input. 29 55' 35.24" N 31 49' 45.85" E altitude 482.7 m I will try and work out the hieght of the southern horizon using hints and tips given to me earlier, unless someone beats me to it. I'm pretty sure kottamia would not have been able to see it on 23rd feb 1987. "The coordinates of SN 1987A are RA 05 : 35 : 27 (h:m:s) Dec-69 : 16.2 (deg:m)" A big thanks to robin on that one and the web link. I have it marked on my chart now. Apparently it should be more visible in 2007 as the energy from the shockwave passes through the surrounding gases and causes them to glow. Fascinating object. Just happen to live on the wrong side of the world to see it. Did anyone get a picture of that meteor in orion? Covered in cloud down here so no view. Had a great view on new years eve. Seven sisters really clear. Nice way to end the year. Happy New Year to all. Lee, Southern England. |

I'm surprised that Google Earth hasn't a placemark download for this.
Someone will take the time to it, I'm sure. -- Markdj wrote in message ups.com... try: http://www.observatory-guide.org/index_en.htm C. |

![]() "Black Flag" requested: Anyone know of a map showing the location of observatoies around the world? Even a list of lat/lon coordinates would be good. ... There is such a map on the inside cover of the (now way out-of-date, alas) book _Observatories of the World_, by Siegfried Marx and Werner Pfau, 1982. An extensive, current list of observatories -- both optical and radio -- and their geographic coordinates (including altitude) can be found in section J of the annually published _The Astronomical Almanac_. -- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Mark Gingrich San Leandro, California |

Slightly OT - a review of "Great Observatories of the World" by Serge Brunier & Anne-Marie Langrange - Firefly Books ISBN 1-55407-055-4 will appear sometime early this year in BAA Journal. Covers the full electromagnetic spectrum [not just visual!] both on and off earth in full colour.
It supplements the 1982 B&W "Observatories of the World" by Siegfried Marx & Werner Pfau - Blandford Press ISBN 0-7137-1191-4. Both contain ob location maps and co-ords. Hope that helps. Nytecam 51N 0.1W |
