Just been out and got an excellent look at M42.
Living in central Peterborough I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually a lot better than when I last looked from a village. I think it's partly because I have a clearer view of that area of sky - my old observing location had the house to the south so I had to wait for objects to appear "round the side" and much lower in the orange light pollution. Anyway, looking straight at it, I could clearly see the stars making up the trapezium with a greenish - grey cloud around them. Averted vision improved the view and I was impressed how much detail I could see in the nebula. Anyway, merry crimbo to all! James |
