observations...
it would seem to me that BOINC is not as stable or easy to run. i got it started on my XP box but it still very iffy and seems to have a lot of trouble connecting and delivering completed packets and getting new packets to work on. i tried starting it on one of my 98 boxes and it still won't get a packet to work on. lots of error 500's. has anybody gotten it to work on 98? i've got six 98 boxes running the s@h, and i'd like to continue helping but there are limits to my patience. it's just not easy to learn for non-coders i guess. and s@h seems to rely on everyday peeps to run this in their background on their pc's. and if the users who had previously used s@h stop running BOINC i'd be willing to venture a guess that, they'd be willing to switch back, or at least wish they hadn't started down this path. how many users did they have before and how many will they have after the conversion to BOINC? i guess we'll really find out on 12/16... i'll get off my soapbox now... tech questions... 1) how much does BOINC stay in the background? two of my 98 boxes are used as vcr's for a few hours a night. the command line s@h did not interfere and did just great. will BOINC be just as unobtrusive? 2) i have installed BOINC on one 98 box and one XP box, XP started but 98 did not. i used the same acct name on each. is this bad? should i have done it like a render farm and let one control many? i was running all of my s@h on two different accounts. 4 on one and 2 on the other. my XP box appears to have two seti WU's running now while my 98 box says (locaal host) and presents no % worked. any thoughts? penitently, squished |

The doom sayers seem to be a very small few... i am not dooming boinc or s@h, i am just saying, if 98 users can't use it then they aren't likely to upgrade for a program for somebody elses use. XP sales are not that high, and it's an arduous task to share unlike 98 (bill's got a cashflow problem i guess). set up a vote page or wait and see december 16th. in either case you're losing six of my boxes, it's that simple. 1) how much does BOINC stay in the background? two of my 98 boxes are used as vcr's for a few hours a night. the command line s@h did not interfere and did just great. will BOINC be just as unobtrusive? Or upgrade to some other OS... never had a problem using my 98 boxes like vcr's. not gonna upgrade what's not broken. couldn't if i wanted to anyway, i don't have the $'s to do it. my running s@h was being a part of a greater good, and boinc does not allow 98 to play. that's eletist and not asking everyone who wants to help to help, it's limiting the help to pc's running better than 98. bad plan on their part. i can't be a part of the solution as i don't code, but i can help by lending my pc power to seti, when iw will allow me to use my six 98 boxes. 2) i have installed BOINC on one 98 box and one XP box, XP started but [...] You can have multiple hosts running on the same account no problem. Good luck and welcome to Boinc, all get to the internet ok, boinc is 98 unfreindly. had 7 boxes working to help, now it's just 1. bye bye seti, let me know when we get a 98 friendly version of boinc. later, squished Happy crunchin' Martin |

thanks for the link. i guess after reading a bit that it just won't
run on 98... that's a shame. s@h lost 5 boxes at my house, and my XP box is not on at all times. no skin off my nose, but i do hope they change the boinc software to be more inclusive. and i only know maye a dozen people running xp at home, it's simply too expensive and too much of a security nightmare, most of the peeps i know are "happy" 98 users and have no plans of updating to XP. again, not my loss. later, squished On Sat, 10 Dec 2005 01:22:13 +0000, John wrote: In article , squished writes observations... it would seem to me that BOINC is not as stable or easy to run. i got it started on my XP box but it still very iffy and seems to have a lot of trouble connecting and delivering completed packets and getting new packets to work on. i tried starting it on one of my 98 boxes and it still won't get a packet to work on. lots of error 500's. has anybody gotten it to work on 98? i've got six 98 boxes running the s@h, and i'd like to continue helping but there are limits to my patience. it's just not easy to learn for non-coders i guess. and s@h seems to rely on everyday peeps to run this in their background on their pc's. and if the users who had previously used s@h stop running BOINC i'd be willing to venture a guess that, they'd be willing to switch back, or at least wish they hadn't started down this path. how many users did they have before and how many will they have after the conversion to BOINC? i guess we'll really find out on 12/16... i'll get off my soapbox now... tech questions... 4 on one and 2 on the other. my XP box appears to have two seti WU's running now while my 98 box says (locaal host) and presents no % worked. any thoughts? penitently, squished Answers at - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_index.php - community discussion groups. I've tried all the updates since then but they all ran slower and caused crashes. Unfortunately 4.19 is no longer available to download on the website but if you are keen to continue Seti on your machines it must be available somehow.? Ian |
