I don't know the scope but here are three sources for getting info on
scope quality:

Astronomical Observing, Equipment and Accessories.

If it's the same as other bushnell scopes, one should turn around, face away
from it and RUN LIKE HELL!

There are better telescopes than these at a price. But for the
amateur buying his first telescope for say less than $200 are there any
good scopes out there?

Sure. Take a look at what Orion (www.telescope.com) offers for
beginners. They have a couple of nice 4.5" reflectors for under $200, as
well as several refractors.

You might want to look at the December issue of Sky&Telescope magazine
for the article "Low-Cost Starter Scopes." We tested 11 scopes under
$200 and did find a few good ones.

Gary

For under $200 they might check out Stargazer Steve, he has/had a 3inch
reflector on a simple mount. If they could save up a few more bucks, I'd go
with his 4.25in f9 Dob which is a very find starter telescope. I've got one
myself.

That's for sure. A friend who's a stocker at a local supermarket was
just "awarded"
a Bushnell Voyager 78-9565 Refractor and the rack-and-pinion focusing
assembly
literally disintegrated. I couldn't even identify the "metal" (the
alleged "pot metal")
which seems to have the strength (hah!) of 60-40 tin-lead solder. I
offered to fix
it for him (using brass) and I'll get to that next weekend -- the
optics, surprisingly,
aren't too bad and are the only good thing about it (once focusing is
fixed :-)

Though none of the definitions I found look like something you'd use for
a rack and pinion :-)

"Pot metal" in the sense of someone at the Bushnell factory in the
Phillippines smoking too much ganga weed or crack cocaine. The
assembly is total crap, look at these pics:

It's crap like that, from Bushnell, that gives astronomy a bad name.
What's worse? Tasco or Bushnell? Dunno.
