Default Shuttle window question

I was just watching a program on NASA's space centers on The Science
Channel, and they stated that each of Shuttle's forward cockpit windows
gets polished for between 600 to 800 man-hours after each flight.
Is that an accurate figure? That seems like a tremendous amount of time
to spend on window maintenance.
Would there be any problems if they just examined them for significant
damage and just gave them a quick clean-up if none was found?

Pat
