Default And the Benefits of Mounting Rings for an OTA Are?

Has anyone produced a primer or treatise, scholarly or otherwise, on why
rings are preferred for large OTAs, say, that will support 12" or larger
OTAs for Newtonians, SCTs, and other tubes? I think the standard answer is
that the rings will reduce tube flexure.
