Default New Imagers from Orion

Orion is advertising two new digital
imagers. A $100 CMOS for solar system
imaging and a $400 cooled CCD DSO
imager.

Dumb Question Alert

I have been looking at buying a Toucam webcam to eventually do the job of
the $100 Orion item.

Am I better to buy it or a $90 Toucam?

Depends. You will still need to get a
1.25" adapter ~$20 and software (free).
So your $90 ToUCam is still about $110.

Just did some reading on the Orion imagers and they require USB 2.0 or
higher. My old laptop has a USB 1.1 connection.

I like the idea of 60fps on the Toucam as my DOB is unguided. I can
then grab 1/4 sec of these with little star trailing.

The specs actually say 2.0 or 1.1 but the 2.0 is
recommended. That said if you're looking for a
sure thing in Solar system imaging I would go with
the ToUCam and add an adapter.

Thanks Hilton

I am also looking at the Philips Vesta Scan PCVC 690K. Even cheaper
and from what I can dig up on the web the results can be decent.

I had a LOT of problems with a SAC IV-2 so I dumped it. This USB 2.0
required but win 98 OK thing doesn't make sense. That's where I had the
trouble with SACs camera. I bought a USB 2 card but it never worked with
Win98. So, I bought a USB card for my laptop with runs XP. It didn't work
with it either.

I'm wondering how this is going to go....heck. I need a new laptop
too....right?

Oh god, where does it all end..........

I have an SAC IV and have had no problems serious problems with it. I use
an athlon XP mini-tower with it, and the USB connection works fine every
time. Several things I don't like about the version I have is that the
maximum image size is too low (640x480), you can't get the moon all in one
view without a focal reducer (which I don't have) I assume because of the
small size of the chip, and the longest exposure it takes is 1/5 sec. I
don't use it much anymore since I got my Canon 300D, which is much easier
to use, takes much higher resolution images, has better color balance, and
I can get the entire moon imaged on the chip without a focal reducer.

Yes, but the Sac IV-2 is a totally different animal than the older SAC IV.
