Hi all,
I am fortunate enough to be going on a trip to New York in about a month so I'm now wondering what new bits of kit to buy at those tempting $ prices. I'm considering a bino-viewer. There's the standard Denkmeier SCT package but that's still pretty expensive - $699 plus I'd have to buy at least one eyepiece (to match one of the ones I already have - I'm thinking of getting another TV 8-24 zoom at $210). Probably too steep. What about the Williams-Optics bino viewer? That costs around $199 at Adorama in NY. Has anyone had any experience of this? Is it the same as the bino-viewers I've seen advertised at http://www.scopesnskies.com for around =A3120? In which case there's not much of a saving to be had by shopping in the States..... What other kit do you think would be a good purchase? i.e. significantly cheaper over there? (I have an LX10 8" SCT btw) Also - has anybody shopped at Adorama? Are there any other good Astro stores in NY? thanks, Jeremy |

How about a nice shiny new Nagler? Bunches cheaper over there!
Good savings available on narrow-band or light pollution filters (and they're easy to smuggle back in :-) Grab me a 14" LX200 GPS with UHTC while you're there please :-) Cheers Beats |

Aim for a 14" RCX400 instead. In fact, buy two, tape them together and pass them off as a rather badly designed pair of bins ;-) -- Pete http://www.digitalsky.org.uk |

If you do get stopped at Customs and asked if you have anything to declare do not try to fob them off. Say yes, that way at least you have a chance of keeping your goods. |

If you are going to buy in the US remember this
1. That US prices DO NOT include sales tax which I think is around 8% in NY state 2. Stores don't always carry a full stock line so if you want something specific call ahead and get them to put it by 3. Depending on which airline you may encounter weight limits if you buy anything large like a telescope. The US airlines are imposing a 50lb weight limit, heavier bags incur charges 4. If you go thru the red channel in London have your receipts handy. I normally prepare a list of what I have bought and give it to the customs officer and they calculate the VAT and duty and always pay with a credit card. Hope this helps, Lilian |
