Rosamond Report
Figured this would be the last time to set up as I'd be switching over to weekend only and for many moon viewing. Got up to the area and figured I'd better put a bit of gas in the car, found arco out of gas so had to use citco at a higher price. Got the scope set up and my camera too, I shoot venus and Jupiter with it for about 5 shots. Still had people come up and ask about MARS, so I gave out the rest of my MARS info sheets, a lot of the folks where there just to ask about MARS, and didn't take a look. During a brake I saw a guy trying to push his car to the arco station, which by now had gotten a load of gas, he was one legged and no one was stopping to help they would just go around him, so I ran over and helpped him get his car to the station, just as we reached the station driveway a CHP pulled up behind used his car to push it the rest of the way in. I took two extra asprin right away as I knew my knees would be telling me about it. Last two guys where from the racetrack and one guy could never understand how come we only see the same side of the moon, so using his buddy, him, and myself I set up a makeshift demo and gave him the info along with it. When he left he understood, and this is good, after 50+ years of not understanding! His buddy had asked if I knew the radio program by "Art Bell" and he said some NASA Astronaut who had been on an Apollo mission had said on the show that he had seen "Lights" on the otherside ( Dark ) of the moon. Then he came up with the Face on Mars, I've got to find a B/W photo of that so I can print it out to show to ones like him, so they can see what it's like. Saturday night was slower, but still had mostly young folks stop by along with a few others. Along with the planets and stars, I got to watch the cops running back and forth, don't know what was going on, but they where running a lot. All total I had about 10 people that night. Sunday was DEAD, even foster freeze was slow, for the 2 hours I was there the only place I saw doing a lot of sales was arco, what with gas at $2.93 a lot of drivers stop there before heading into L.A. So now I switch over to following the moon, until MARS gets into the early evening sky. -- The Lone Sidewalk Astronomer of Rosamond Telescope Buyers FAQ http://home.inreach.com/starlord Astronomy Net Online Gift Shop http://www.cafepress.com/astronomy_net |

Check out the Wikipedia article on the 'Mars face'... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Face_on_Mars Print out both the Viking picture and the Global Surveyor picture for a comparison. Its interesting. When you squint at the Global Surveyor picture, the face actually becomes more visible. Stupot BTW, does anyone know what the 'raw' orientation of the Viking pic was? I wonder if the face would have been spotted if the face was upside down... Saturday night was slower, but still had mostly young folks stop by along with a few others.
