Default RIP David Sinden

If you haven't heard, David Sinden, former chief Optical Engineer of
Grubb Parson, Managing director of Sinden Optical, one of the finest
opticians of the 20 th Century, passed away on Monday after a long
illness. He had been suffering from cancer for some time.

A great, yet humble man has gone.

Agreed - his finest achievement probably associated with the AAT - see http://www.aao.gov.au/AAO/about/aat.html

"Commissioned in 1974 (read a brief history), the Anglo-Australian Telescope was one of the last 4-metre equatorially mounted telescopes to be constructed. Its excellent optics, exceptional mechanical stability and precision computer control make it one of the finest telescopes in the world."

Very saddened to hear this - I never realised he was ill.
He did so much to encourage amateur astronomers up here in the North-East.
I fondly remember going to his workshop near Newcastle on a Saturday
morning where like-minded people gathered for a chat (and expert advice
from Dave!)
)
A great, yet humble man has gone.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Peter Wise at Cape Instruments told me, and Peter had previously said
several months back that David was ill. Peter was told the sad news
today by one of David's former colleagues at Grubb Parsons.

David was one of the nicest blokes I've ever met. It really is the end
of an era.
