Default which plossl?

before i bin my dust collecting 4" (please don't laugh) tasco reflector (oh
go on then, laugh out loud) scope i was thinking of trying a different
eyepiece or 2 to see if there's any improvement - read this on the www
somewhere. long term plans are to get a meade (possibly etx125) scope.
which makes of plossl should i be looking at and which should be avoided?
i was thinking of the meade 4000 series as a starter, which could also be
used on the future purchase.

thanks for any advice

cheers!

someone must have some experience of these????

meade?
celestron?
antares?
a n other?

my searches thus far suggest meade is the way to go. are the 4000's 'better'
than the 3000's?

if you don't want to reply on group, remove the mint with the hole ;-)

A bloke off ebay sells new Plossl 4000s from the States pretty
regularly. I've bought two off him now at under =A330 inc. post to the
UK. Given my arrangement is a Nikon 300mm camera lens via an adaptor, I
can't really comment on whether they're better or worse than anything
else, but at thirty odd quid, you can't go far wrong.

I own several of the Series 4000 Meade EPs in both 1.5 and 2 inch barrel
diameters from 40mm to 6.4mm and am very pleased with them. I can't really
compare them against anything else as these are all I have. I like them a
lot. They give good clear views when seeing permits. They seem well made and
do the job they say they do.

I also have a GSO 2" 26mm plossl which is very good (and cheap - £25 or so)
but doesn't seem to give quite as colourful views as the Meades. I also used
to have a regular Meade 5mm plossl (don't know what series) but it was
rubbish...

Hope this helps. I would say you are best buying EPs on eBay or online from
the USA. You will get them for less than half the price than that charged by
most UK dealers.

thanks both. got a few 4000's on the way to me now, so time will tell
whether these turn the dust collector into something that is semi useable.

cheers, dave
