If there was a fix for getting Apollo 13 back from the moon--what's with
*this* no-count, wet-behind-the-ears generation of NASA being so totally out of the Right Stuff as to do things right? It's like a bunch of dizzy boom-box bopping teenagers rodding around in Daddy's Car and knowing not even so much as how to check the oil, let alone adjust a carburetor. -- E http://mackiemesser.1accesshost.com/ http://bobbisoxsnatchers.blogspot.com/ "The shortsighted squeal, they always squeal except when they are being diddled or hypnotized." --Ezra Pound -- .................................................. ............ Some things it's simply impossible, impractical, or counterproductive to attempt a fix. It's quite possible that if the explosion on A13 had happened slightly differently, due to random factors (way round the heater was installed, what order the bolts were tightened on the tanks, ...), that everyone aboard A13 would have been dead by the time they got back to earth. If attempting a fix, for something that does not seem to be a serious issue turns it into a catastrophic problem, then you're going to look really stupid. |

Now this is significant..

![]() "Ian Stirling" wrote in message ... Some things it's simply impossible, impractical, or counterproductive to attempt a fix. As the NASA team of Apollo 13 proved, damned near *nothing* is "impossible" or too "impractical, or counterproductive to attempt a fix" when the value of the human lives at stake is totally understood. This argument which follows, of baseless speculation from what did not happen on Apollo 13 is even more useless than the impractical and counterproductive "School-Teacher in Space" mentality presently attempting to pass itself off as a "space program" at NASA, which were it not so sad, would be laughable. It's quite possible that if the explosion on A13 had happened slightly differently, due to random factors (way round the heater was installed, what order the bolts were tightened on the tanks, ...), that everyone aboard A13 would have been dead by the time they got back to earth. Yet another "if" . . . If attempting a fix, for something that does not seem to be a serious issue . . . Does not "seem"? What kind of science is that? I'll tell ya: it's no kind of science at all, it's purely a speculative mathematics of statistical analysis, of overgrown children sitting around safe and sound on the ground calculating the odds of disaster on their pocket calculators . . . From today's NY Times: "Analysis suggested that the possibility a chunk of blanket might hit some other piece of the shuttle was 11/2 in 100, Mr. Hale said, but many uncertainties remain." turns it into a catastrophic problem . . . What "catastrophic problem"? If they were to try a fix on that blanket and fail, both the Russians and Atlantis wait on the pad for the rescue. The provisions are in place for doing it right this time, for facing the risk squarely and acting responsibly in terms of it. But no, they take the easy, risky way 'out'. Just like a bunch of immature kids in Daddy's car, rodding around street corners at 60, kids who need their "School Teacher in Space." This is the same irresponsible, slack attitude that doomed the former mission. then you're going to look really stupid. And right there you've nailed it down to exactly what's wrong with NASA and the entire generation from which it draws its "manpower": your concern is over a bunch of stinking appearances! How things will "look"? How things may "seem"? Not the Right Stuff. Totally not the right stuff. Not the stuff that put men on the moon and brought the universe to our doorstep with Hubble. This is the NASA that plays childish little kid games in near space and trashes Hubble instead of fixing it; the NASA that could no sooner put a man on the moon, than build some stupid balloon big enough to bounce them to a landing on it. -- E http://mackiemesser.1accesshost.com/ http://bobbisoxsnatchers.blogspot.com/ "It is a much cleverer thing to talk nonsense than to listen to it." --Oscar Wilde -- .................................................. ............ Well,
I appreciate your prescience here on SSS.. WVB: A man who made NASA a militaristic and nationalistic event that eventually lost the interest of the American people? (Because it became irrelavent both militaristically and nationalistically?) And now we have a MORON itchy to be dictator fool hole of a p3nis braned asshoe.. missioning US 2 MARs.. Hmm.. isn't Mars the GOD OF WAR? And so it goes.. Thanks, Rick Why did Kennedy make that speech? E. McSquared wrote: "Rick Nelson" wrote in message ... Now this is significant..
