I would hazard a guess that almost every famous modern astrophysicist has been there overnight. However, assuming a few years to be a required residence period you can have: John Couch Adams Sir George Biddle Airy Sir Hermann Bondi James Challis John Herschel Sir Fred Hoyle Donald Lynden-Bell Zdenek Kopal Sir Martin Ryle more recently Carlos Frenk Stephen Hawking Malcolm Longair Neil Turok There are bound to be many more depending on what cutoff criterion you set. You should be able to get one for every letter of the alphabet with a bit of effort! Some famous astrophysicists are famous only among astronomers and/or cosmologists. That seems an unreasonably restrictive pair of criteria. For example (although not an astronomer) there can be no doubt about Rutherford's eminence. But his degree work was done in NZ. (While he did then spend a little while in Cambridge, he wasn't *eminent* for that, AFAIK.) But, having become eminent by 1919, he moved to Cambridge, and is counted as a Cambridge Eminence. I don't know where he actually lived; but he might well have lived outside the City itself. ISTM that you should include as candidates all who took first or second degrees there, and all who for a period of time related to their eminence were staff of the University or closely associated institutions. But not, if there are any examples, eminent astronomers belonging only to institutions outside Cambridge but with the good taste to have chosen to dwell in the City. -- © John Stockton, Surrey, UK. Well I never Dr John,
forgive me for using an abbreviation, I must do better!! Which is maybe why I am probably not as "eminent" as your good self or the Eminent people who attended the Uni EG . Maybe my use of abbreviation upset you? it is irrelevant to my initial request anyway. As I said, I am happy with the responses I have, not only from yourself but the other kind people of the group as well I am happy I can go and do what I need to do now. thanks for your input which I really appreciate. ![]() "Andy" wrote in message ... Well I never Dr John, forgive me for using an abbreviation, I must do better!! Some people are like that on usenet. Very knowledgeable and helpful, but sometimes surprise with inappropriate responses. However, it's not a sin, and (generally) it's not meant personally. all part of life's rich tapestry, and u.s.a is a better place for having Dr J as a contributor. |
