I wonder if, according the CNN, the Discovery will travel at "18 times the
speed of light"... http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/pickover/pc/shuttle.html |

Mind you, those boys and girls at CNN have slowed down lots of stuff, so maybe they have done it with light and nobody has noticed? There's a pretty good look at how the Media covered the STS-107
accident at - http://www.sts107.info/accident/media/media.htm At least CNN was covering the reentry, unlike the other networks. I remember getting up that morning and surfing through all of the news channels to try to find out what was happening and CNN had some updates about Columbia's progress. Amazing how quickly all of the other networks started covering the story after it was clear that an accident had happened. Alex Harris |

They probably ment the speed of sound not light LOL 17500 IS MORE THAN 18 TIMES SPEED OF SOUND (Top-posting corrected - AND STOP YELLING!) The speed of sound is dependent on the pressure, temperature and density of the medium through which the sound is traveling. The speed of sound in the atmosphere at standard sea-level pressure, temperature and density is roughly 1,100 feet per second. 18 times that figure is 19,800 feet per second. This is 13,500 miles per hour, which is indeed less than 17,500 miles per hour. However, since you're speaking of velocity in a relative vacuum, the "speed of sound" is essentially meaningless anyway, so just relax. -- "Fame may be fleeting but obscurity is forever." ~Anonymous "I believe as little as possible and know as much as I can." ~Todd Stuart Phillips www.angryherb.net |
