Do you think they would move the stack back to the VAB on short notice like this? I think it takes 24 hours to get it from 39B back to the VAB at top crawler speed. JD |

They could do it overnight if they wanted. |

JD WESH reported last night it would take 48 hours to move the shuttle and bed it down for the storm. Supposedly a management meeting was being held at 5:30 7/7/05 to discuss. The discussion from NHC certainly doesn't lend much confidence to the forecast. Sadly, I am on the west cost of Florida. I hope this thing stays out to sea. David |

Is there a breakdown of how much time it takes between decision time and: Stack starts to move Stack arrives at VAB Stack secured inside VAB ? If the RSS wraps around the shuttle, how much wind/rain can it safely widthstand ? If they bring shuttle back to VAB, once it is brought back to the PAD, where does the countdown begin ? |

Rollout (and rollback) takes about seven hours. I think NASA the other day prepositioned the Crawler at the pad just in case. Brian |

I thought I read where the payload had to be installed while the shuttle was on the pad. Is is safe to move the stack while the payload is inside of the payload bay? or do they have to take it out first before they can move the stack? JD |

Rapid evacuation of a Saturn V back to the VAB in the event of suddenly-arriving bad weather was part of the specs for the system. A bigger issue is how much time it takes to get ready for the move, although that depends a little on how urgent the situation is -- there's a difference between a normal rollback and an emergency "move it or lose it" evacuation. -- "Think outside the box -- the box isn't our friend." | Henry Spencer -- George Herbert | |

The payload doesn't have to be installed at the pad, it just usually is as a matter of expediency. The payload would have rolled back to the VAB in Discovery. Rollback has now been called off.
