Renowned Egyptian Geologist Zaghlul Al-Naggar: Deep Impact Spacecraft Had a
Military Goal and Negligible Scientific Value

Following is an excerpt from and interview with Egyptian geologist Dr.
Zaghlul Al-Naggar, which aired on Al-Jazeera TV on July 5, 2005.
Dr. Zaghlul Al-Naggar: The main goal of this operation (Deep Impact) is
military. America wants to prove to the world that it is capable of hitting
a target with a circumference of no more than six kilometers, hundreds of
millions of kilometers away. The goal is first and foremost a military one,
and its scientific benefit is negligible. I doubt that the samples they
obtained could yield scientific results of any value.

The Arabs are really, really paranoid, aren't they?

It's all nonsense, of course.

It's not specifically an Arab thing -- that whole region (which includes
non-Arab populations, e.g. the Iranians), with the possible exception of
Israel, is very big on conspiracy theories and similar paranioa.

Well, they have this thing about meteorites...

Some months back, GWH started a thread here on whether Deep Impact
needed an export license for a guided missile. Someone may have taken
him seriously.

Which really is a shame since 1000 years ago it was the reverse.

The French, Russians, and Ottoman and _especially_ the British Empires had
nothing to do with creating that paranoia! Lies I say! It was all caused
by, um, er, that rock over there!

It goes back much farther than that. For a long time, that region and
those peoples were "the doormats of history", trampled every few decades
when some superpower with an agenda swept through and wrecked the place in
passing.

(Mohammed succeeded in unifying the area because he got religion at *just*
the right time, hitting a narrow launch window when the Byzantines and the
Persians -- the superpowers of the day -- were both exhausted after going
at each other for several decades, and hence stayed home for a while.)

Well with the connection of time to money by way of interest, Europe
simply past the Middle East in manners of banking.
