Lane Smith dies

Lane Smith, the actor who portrayed newsman Emmett Seaborn in the
miniseries "From Earth to the Moon", died Monday at age 69.

From Memphis, Tennessee, Davis' career ranged from his portrayal of
Richard Nixon in the TV movie "The Final Days" to some voice work on the
animated "King of the Hill" series. His acting roles usually involved
playing jovial or scheming authority figures, such as US Senator, judge,
prosecutor, police chief.

The drawling Emmett Seaborn in "From the Earth to the Moon" was a
composite of several extant news reporters, where he reprised the Apollo
11 landing awe of Cronkite but whose voice, mannerisms, and clumsy or
"folksy" style were closer to Dan Rather. From age 34 he obtained 78
screen credits.
