Default New images from Patricks 15" Newt

Hi guys,

I spent a few hours yesterday evening using Patrick's 15" reflector to
webcam Jupiter and Saturn. You can see the results here...

http://www.astro-sharp.com/pm_jup_sat.asp

I'm sure that I'm not getting the best out of the raw AVI files with
Registax 3. I don't think I am driving the s/w properly. I'm trying to get
Pete Lawrence to do his magic on them, so there might be some improved
versions coming.

If anyone out there is interested in having a go with the raw files, I can
post some FTP details to download them. In zipped form they are not too big
assuming you have broadband! (Jupiter 31MB, Saturn 80MB)

Cheers

OK, I'm in the process of setting it up. I'll post details later today.

Here's a couple of quick processed versions. The one on the right has
been processed a little harder and looks a bit too sharp in my
opinion.

A bit on the crappy side, even for the UK (no offence meant!). Is it
the seeing or is it the telescope? Next time capture 120s each time and
repeat as often as your disc capacity allows. One in a (long) while
gotta be decent or...

No offence to me - it's not my AVI ;-) Ian may never correspond with
you again though!

The 15" does suffer from having a very thick mirror and it takes a
while to calm down. Last night's seeing wasn't perfect but better
than of late. I'm not sure if Ian checked the scope's collimation
before doing the capture through. Probably the seeing and the
telescope to be honest.

Looking at the raw AVI's my own comment would be that the capture was
a little on the darkish side. However, having been there in the past
when captures were taken, it's sometimes difficult to judge how to
deal with all of that light. Experience will improve things no doubt.

Actually, half of the problem seems to be that my work monitor's
colour profile has been fiddled with! Looking at the images on
another monitor I see what you mean! I'll get them sorted out at home
where no one fiddles with my stuff. Or at least no one tells me!

Come on Andrea, just say what you mean - boy, you don't mince words do you!

This is the best I've ever got with Jupiter. I like the dark look, but I
found that If I made it brighter I got those weird radial artifacts near the
edges. The seeing was not perfect and I didn't check the collimation because
it is a two-man job on that huge scope. We plan to cool the 3inch+ thick
mirror in the near future. I think that, on a good night and attention to
detail, we will get some world-class planetary images out of that scope.

Regards
Ian.

Here's my attempt - nothing special, I'm much more of a DSO guy, but how
many people can say they've processed raw data from Patrick's 15" scope?

Nice one Tony,

Finer detail visible than on mine

Pete Lawrence has managed these: http://www.digitalsky.org.uk/temp/ids-jup-20050421.html
