Which astronauts have waited longest to do his or her first
spaceflight? Paolo Nespoli from Italy? Deke Slayton (..had to wait from Mercury until Skylab)? I guess that all in NASA astronaut group 17 havent got a flight yet, due to the Columbiadisaster in 2003. Will all in group 17 and later groups get a flight before the shuttle is cancelled in the end of this decade? Bye/ Strindberg |

![]() Slayton only waited 16 years, 1959 to 1975 -- two members of the 'XS-11' class of 1967 had to wait until 1985 to fly -- 18 years. One member of the 1966 group also did not fly until 1985 -- 19 years. ...as I recall -- needs fact-checking... Barbara Morgan was selected to train as a backup to Christa McAuliffe on July 19, 1985. So it's coming up on 20 years for her. Rusty |

Gotta wonder if that one should count since she was not a part of the astronaut office in the interim. (If you *do* count her, I suspect there may be some ESA astros who originally trained as Alternate Payload Specialists who would then also qualify.) -Group 15 - selected Dec 9, 1994 Susan Kilrain - 2.32 years Pamela Melroy - 2.50 years You might want to double-check that one - ISTR Melroy waited longer than that. -- JRF Reply-to address spam-proofed - to reply by E-mail, check "Organization" (I am not assimilated) and think one step ahead of IBM. |

Yep. Typo. Pamela Melroy should be 5.84 years. Rusty |
