Hi,
I've used the classic SETI screensaver for years on multiple PC's, but earlier tonight decided to go ahead and try out Boinc. Boinc downloaded and installed just fine. I successfully transfered my account to Boinc and set my preferences via the web based configuration. I successfully "attached a new product" (SETI) using the given URL and Account Key. After entering the URL and Account Key, it appears to have successfully negotiated with the host. In the transfers section of Boinc it is now unsuccessfully attempting to download a program called "setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.exe". Not a single bit of this 786k file has transfered. Its status has remained hung as downloading. Thinking maybe SETI is down, I set up an account for the "ProteinPredictor". Same thing -- successful account creation and activation but no net traffic. Relevant info: WinXP (SP1), broadband cable, no proxy servers, software (Norton) firewall configured to allow Boinc full network access, no problems at all with any other network enabled software, ect. Thinking perhaps that port forwarding needed to be enabled on my wireless router (no mention of required port forwarding in Boinc website though), I tried setting both this particular PC in a "DMZ" and as a last ditch connected it directly to the cable modem (bypassing the router). Same results. I'm hoping that Boinc is just down. (?) I'm getting the same non-results from several PC's, even though my router has been ruled out. The classic SETI screensaver is still running just fine on one of the PC's. Anyway, I don't want to sound disgruntled, but I really don't feel like I should be needing to do extensive troubleshooting to get this thing to work when I am "donating" my own CPU cycles. If this thing is more complicated at the user level than what it needs be then, unfortunetly, I'm going to have to uninstall it and just go back to the classic SETI until they discontinue the project via that application. So -- I'm hoping that it is just down right now? (On their website, it shows the status for all the servers being in the "green" though.) Thanks! -Eric |

Like I said, I don't want to come off as "disgruntled". Just expected the thing to be simple and work with no problems. Cheers, -Eric |

Don't we all :-) Usually it does, in my experience at least, but you just picked a bad day to sign up - most of the time my PCs just get on with boincing, but yesterday they were all having problems contacting the schedulers, which only seemed to go away at about 2am uk time this morning. Better luck today! Alan Woodford The Greying Lensman |

Indeed, it did appear that I just picked a bad day (servers down) to try out Boinc --- as this morning it popped fully to life. All the installed projects are now running just fine. Still some weird minor quirks and definetly things on the "wish list". At the top of "wish list" would be the ability to use a resume password with Boinc running as a screensaver. From deja and googles, I take it this isn't supported -- even with Boinc 4.25? It allows the screensaver's password box to be checked/enabled, but when the screensaver runs the password box fails to appear. (Screen just goes entirely black.) This effectively locks you out -- only thing you can do is power cycle. Cheers, -Eric |

![]() "Ian Jones" wrote in message Yep, i to have had the "black screen of death" Ian Its unfortunate not being able to use "resume on password" since the Boinc 3D SETI screensaver is pretty nifty. I want to have the screensavers password protected, so won't be able to use it. I just set the screensavers to use window's "blank" screensaver. :/ I hope they add the ability to use passwords in the future. Cheers, -Eric |
