Default foto browsing: what's the deal with those suits? no.1

From apolloarchive.com,
http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/Hi...-67-HC-297.jpg

Now, we all know that all the early manned flights had planned to use
those modified Gemini (G4C?) suits, but what's the deal with those
helmets? They weren't the standard Gemini helmets at all, but something
really strange, with those molded, ridged shells on top that almost
resemble a Klingon's skull ridge (TNG series).

What was the deal with those helmets? Visor protection? I've seen the
fotos of Gemini crews boarding the spacecraft in which the crewman doing
the EVA wore a blue padded slipcover over his sun visor, but I never could
figure _this_ bit out, even after years of browsing the early Apollo
training fotos at the JSC archive and at apolloarchive.com...

The Gemini crews had apparently complained that the visor was
prone to being scratched. Hence this quick fix.

AFAIK, the visor protection assembly clipped onto a standard G4C helmet.
