Default Macs in Astronomy Updated; Canon 20D under Mac & Windows

Thanks to all who e-mailed me about the Macs in Astronomy page at
http://www.davidillig.com/ast-threemacs.shtml. I'm going to keep this
page up to date with your help; indeed, I have updated the software
list this evening.

*****

There is reason to wonder if there is a problem with Canon's SDK for
the 20D -- Mac and Windows. The author of DSLR Focus for Windows
http://www.dslrfocus.com/ _and_ the author of iAstroPhoto for the Mac
http://homepage.mac.com/stevepur/astrophotography/iAstroPhoto/ --
competent progammers both -- are each having problems making their
respective programs work with the 20D. Would-be users of either program
need to be patient.

In the meantime, the Canon software "Digital Photo Professional" (DPP)
and "EOS Capture" work well together under both Mac OS X and Windows
(XP Pro SP 2 in my case). I have successfully used the Canon software
as a focusing aid by making short exposures of a rich star field and
examining the result at 100 percent (View 100% View) in DPP. Turning
off the in-camera noise reduction speeds this process.

You may also want to include IRAF- http://iraf.noao.edu/ . It is a
difficult app to use and to configure, but it is the most powerful
astronomical image processing program in existence, and has an OS X
port- http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~marcosh/iraf/ .

Not for the faint of heart, but no astronomical software list is
complete without it.

Thanks. I have IRAF, and this is the second time that I have forgotten
to include it in an update. Can't figure out why. Couldn't be old age,
could it?

Also: ImageJ from the NIH http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/features.html;
Linux, Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, and Windows. "ImageJ is the world's fastest
pure Java image processing program..."

Probably memory leakage ;-)

Here's something about switching to a Mac.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Last year was the Mac's 20th anniversary:

Puts it all in perspective -- LOL!

Well, that's like saying the AMD Althon 64 just celebrated the
25th anniversary of the X86 chip. It has nothing in common with
what existed back then. If the Mac did (with it's predecessors)
then you'd still using Lisas with black and white
screens and 1 meg of memory.
It's more correct to say it is the "concept" of the Mac that has
had an anniversary.
