Default Loss of UK Astroads?

Hi - anyone know why Chris Heapy's Astroads (his site in general) hasn't
seen any updates?

Barry

Many of us across the various forums have been asking the same. It would be
a real shame to loose such an asset as astro ads. More to the point I hope
Chris H is ok.

Hear, hear! If it goes then, unless someone else is able to replace it,
we'll be stuck with various commercial site "small ad" pages and that
Canadian site that spammed astro-ads advertisers to drum up custom.

He's let the ukastroads domain name slip as well, and the updating has
been more sporadic of late. I find myself hoping that it's just because
he's updating the system to something less time-consuming for him.

Best,
Stephen

There was already an enquiry on previous thread:
'Buy or sell used astro equipment here'.

I volunteered to email Chris Heapy, and did so. Sadly there has been
no reply, as yet.

Chris mentioned on easynet.announce in December that he was moving
the site to another host. Easynet shut down their Usenet servers on
Jan 1st, and only gave their users 2 weeks' notice in advance of this
(other Easynet brands, such as Zoom and UK Online, received only 1 week
notice) prompting Chris to move away from Easynet.

Chris is OK, he was out observing on Friday (on his own though - he went to the
wrong site!). I hear he is just a bit fed-up with the hassle he gets from
AstroAds; the fairly constant dribble of complaints and whinging in his in-box.
There is a fair amount of manual work required to keep the site maintained and
his enthusisum has waned - lets hope the new year brings renewed vigour.
I know Chris reads this group from time to time so maybe he will chip in when
he gets a chance.

I would think that the number of people who appreciate the site (and the
equally useful model engineering site) would vastly outweight the whingers.

Unfortunately, he probably doesn't hear much from us. Maybe if we
told him how much we appreciate his service, then the hassle wouldn't
seem so bad ? Or would the potential avalanche of fan-mail be too much ?

Very glad to hear that Chris is ok.

I quite sympathise with him over the whingers. It always seems to me
that if anyone does anything to help everyone else, at no cost, someone
will complain that it isn't good enough, hasn't got photographs, bells,
whistles,etc.

I wouldn't blame him if he stopped, but that would be a great shame.
I've bought and sold loads of stuff on Astro-Ads - All my own personal
gear, not as a 'business', like some. I've got some to sell now.

It's problematical what should happen if Chris does pack it in - I
don't want to start patronising someone who spammed the advertisers on
Astro-Ads! I very much hope that he has a change of heart.

Sorry for sounding a bit thick here, but who/what is the site who has been doing all
the spamming ?

I posted stuff fairly regularly on Chris' site and never had a spam from anyone
touting for business (unlike when I tried to sell my car in local classifieds -
vultures from various car ad mags flock in for the kill). I always found Chris to be
very helpful, even helping me with advice on the wording of a couple of ads.

I *do* also use another advert site, but hesitate to mention it in case it is the
one who is under scrutiny for spamming, but as I know the site owner of that site
too, I cannot imagine it is him .....

Be interested to hear comments in public or private. Best wishes to Chris H if he
does read this.....

Clear Skies,

David Harris
