Default A bargain.

For those of you who go out observing and have equipment that runs of
12volts (LX-90 etc) you may be interested in this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...=1&doy=30 m12

Its a 'portable power station' with a 17Ah battery at the bargain price of
£19.99. I bought one today for use with my LX-90 amongst other things.

hi,

It looks the same as the one Aldi are selling for the same price, I've
had a similar one on order from a UK astro supplier for the best part
of 3 months now that was priced at double that amount, they will be
getting an Email cancelling the order this afternoon :O)

The only minor problem with the one from Maplins is that it has only one
ciggy light socket. This can be rectified by getting a 2 or 4 way socket.
3 months on order- that seems a bit excessive. Well I hope the link was
of help to you.

I don't know a great deal about this sort of stuff, is it worth buying
two or threee while they're cheap, or will they last a few years?

I only observe from my garden, so the number of ciggy sockets is not an
issue, I just want one so I don't have to trail a powerlead out and/or
spend a fortune on batteries (the LX90 is a hungry little fellow), do
you think I'd get a full nights observing out one charge? Just the LX90
and maybe a laptop?

Gaz,
If you only observe from your garden then perhaps you may want to
think about getting a 'leisure battery'. I have 2 (a 85Ah and 115Ah). The
85Ah cost me £29.99 though you need to buy a seperate charger. The 115Ah
is rather heavy, but the 85Ah is managable with one hand.

For your question about will the 17Ah power the LX90 and a laptop- I don't
know- a 85Ah certainly will! I too have a LX90 a find it a good scope.

Gaz,
In answer to your question yes, you will easily get a nights viewing
fron the 17amh pack. In fact you will get a few. I use a similar type anlong
with a smaller 4amh pack that fits easilt on the tripod cross members. The
4amh pack does a full 8 hours constant viewing, (not that we have had much
chance of that of late.) If you are running more than just the scope the
4amph would not last. I tend to use the smaller one for the scope only and a
larger one for mintron camera, small screen and mini hair dryer. all works
well.

The Aldi one is £24.99 (reduced from £29.99) and has 3 cig light sockets. It
also has an air compressor built in.It comes with a 2 year guarantee. I
bought one yesterday from Aldi in Kettering. They had loads left.. You have
to buy a cig socket to autostar socket connection lead. I got mine from RS
components for £8.70. Cheaper than the one in the Argos catalogue at £14.99.
From the looks of it it should be able to jump start a Jumbo jet let alone
power a goto.
